Wednesday, June 21: Dance Avondale

Dance Avondale is a private studio and adult career artist performing collective in partnership with Avondale Park. They recognized that dance education, access to view performances, and opportunities to participate in live dance performance are generally accessible for financially secure demographics. Through its commitment to economic accessibility, Dance Avondale bridged the gap of accessible arts, training, and performances. They began with just six families, which grew up to 130 families served by in just one school year.

The dance, For Lo the Winter is Past, it’s history and concepts will first be briefly introduced. The modern dance work in the Humphrey-Weidman-Limon style choreographed by Mary Ann Mee, Charles Weidman’s demonstrator and muse, will then of course be performed. It’s a beautiful, athletic twenty-minute work broken into three sections. This suite abstractly tells the tale of new beginnings and lives well lived. We have our own mobile sound system, so perhaps each section can be presented in a different area. Followed by a class in the Humphrey-Weidman technique, Limon style, otherwise known as fall and recovery, one of the branches of American modern dance.
